The main holiday of the year is something to look forward to. We know we need to relax and so we save up our anxiety and stress and trust that two weeks in the sun will restore our sanity and return us to being fully human. On the other hand, every week-end is meant to offer a break from the routine pressures of life and a chance to unwind and relax. But what if we cannot wait for that big holiday break? Or the week-end passes without ofering respite?

The history of “character” can be traced to an Ancient Greek word “charaktêr” referring to a distinctive mark engraved or pressed on a coin that defines what it is. Our modern “character” is similarly engraved on our being, defining to a large extent how we come across to the world around us. There is a famous quote that may or may not belong to the founder of the Jesuits: “Give me the child until he is seven and I will give you the man.” Or in other words those first seven years of life are the defining years of our fairly permanent character traits.

I was reflecting over the week-end on where authority comes from and how we allow it to affect us.

Authority is the exercise of power and one theory talks about the three “Ps” of power: professional, positional and personal. Professional power comes from your knowledge and expertise, something you have that others do not that gives you the advantage, e.g. a medical consultant.
